The Academy Awards take place Sunday, February 9. In the run up to that presentation, I’ll be previewing each of the nine Best Picture Nominees.

About: This is a film that was controversial when it was released, and will remain so throughout this process. There were those that loved this film. There were those that really were put off by the film. For my part, I appreciate certain aspects of the craft, and I think Phoenix delivers a fantastic performance. But I found the content of this story to be disturbing, and troubling. The ideas presented here are also troubling and concerning. And I didn’t think the film as a whole rose to the level of the lead performance. It was OK, but not a film I would have picked for the Best Picture competition, which is one of the reasons it’s the first getting profiled. I typically move through the field with those I think have the best chance closer to the awards. This is not a film I think will win Best Picture. I think there are too many detractors, and that hurts the top end vote. But I don’t think this film will go away empty handed. Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Golden Globe for her score, and will certainly be near the top of the mix for the Academy Awards. I think they might go another way, but I think she has a chance. But the award I think it has the best chance to win is Best Actor for Phoenix. There are some definite strong contenders. Leonardo DiCaprio will be among the favorites, and I personally was quite taken with Adam Driver in Marriage Story. However, I think Phoenix is the front-runner for now, and is likely the winner here. That could well be the lone representation from the film, though winning a few other technical awards wouldn’t be a shock, either. This is a fascinating and polarizing film, and it will be interesting to see how that impacts its award chances.
