The truth of growing screen size of mobile phone

“Why is the mobile phone screen getting bigger and bigger?”

Different people have different answers, from my perspective, it’s due to the power consumption of processing chips getting higher and higher.

To understand this, we need have some ideas about phone performance evaluation, there are quite lots of medias who focus in this area, generally, they can be divided into 2 categories:

One part is about the user-experience, all related to feelings from customers, quite subjective. The other is about test reports from some professional media, who use professional equipments to test cell phones by experienced engineers. They are using a huge range of scientific ways.

Unfortunately, most of those are the former, since they are easy and direct for customers. Although the latter is rare, but there still are a few companies who insist doing the professional on, Anandtech is one of these medias.Who did ultimate power consumption test under all cores of chips.

Here we take Qualcomm for example, as they produced many generations of processors during last 6 years. Their market share stays number 1 in cell phone chips.

The first generation of CPUs consumes 2 watts. In 2013, it’s increased to 4.5 watts. And then in 2015, the big fever Snapdragon 810, only 3 of 4 cores full loaded, exceeded 8 watts.

Moreover, all the test cell phones use prototype model, which are much bigger and spacious than ordinary mobile phones. They are used by developers, without paying too much attention to the appearance.

Here is a picture , you could see prototype module on the test platform, that black one , super thick, like a piece of brick.

Because it is only used for developing and debugging, not necessary to design so thin, the cooling pressure is much smaller than the average mobile phone.

But even with such a loose design, still exceeds 8 watts, and then automatically shut down, into protection mode.

Nowadays, nearly all cell phone producers are pursuing thinness. In order to solve the overheat problem, the cooling area has to be enlarged, and then screens become larger.

Check it out, you could find that 6, 6.5 and even 7-inch of screen appear exactly at the time of 2015.

But manufacturer will never tell you they can’t solve the fever problem. They always promote the benefits of the big screen ,such as watching movies and playing games.

Overheating definitely means more power usage, and it requires more power to ensure that you don’t have to charge every half-day.

That means, you have to have a bigger battery.

Someone may think , big screen is just about nice appearance and personal choice.

There might be reasons related to this, but, we have to realize, Choosing a big screen or a small screen are both aesthetic choices, isn't it?

If there is a bigger size pursuing based on aesthetic judgment, there must be a smaller size pursuing. There must be some people who want 3.5-inch or even minus.

At least, females are more likely to refuse the big brick-like mobile phone.

But why didn't we see a trend toward this direction these years?

Because , if you don’t leave enough space for the mobile phone, the fever problem will result in the danger of overheating at any time when a cell phone is being used.

Engineers always believe that don’t do it until it has to be done. Now that fever can’t be ignored, then it is necessary to make a bigger screen.

After the peak of fever in 2015, all manufacturers were aware of how serious the problem was. 5 watts became a minefield and untouchable.

So the flagship processor that came out in past 2 years has dropped back to 4.5 to 3.6 watts, as well as the trend of the smart phone screen stop growing.

That s why we cant see those above 6.5 inches anymore.
