The Rage of the Incels

Lately I have been thinking about one of the first things that I ever wrote for the Internet: a series of interviews with adult virgins, published by the Hairpin. I knew my first subject personally…

GA UXDI | Concept project | Spanish Learning | 2 Weeks Sprint

We all agree that learning a new language on your own is not easy and for Neil, a 44 years old English man married with a Colombian woman wasn’t easy neither. The idea behind this concept project was a two-week design sprint to build a rewarding and engaging User Experience mobile app for one of my classmates.

The final product was a hi-fidelity and clickable prototype. I realised that having an overall idea of the user was important, but so was nailing one or two interests in-depth. That’s where I began.

After I wrote a 10 general question script I’ve interviewed Neil.

When he has answered to me ‘I don’t speak Spanish but I should’ I’ve started to dig deeper into what truly concerned him about his knowledge in Spanish.

He also mentioned the main reasons for what makes him fail and also what are his priorities and major concerns about grammar, not rewarding, busy lifestyle and favourite hobbies.

The creation of a new learning app focused on Neil needs, defined some initial challenges, most of which can be cited as:

Problem statement:

Neil need a way to learn Spanish fast because he gets frustrated when he doesn’t succeed and find it rewarding-less, boring and time-consuming’.

With the hand full of interesting problem statements I’ve started to sketch some ideas and features that will help Neil using a Spanish learning app.

After a quick round of crazy 8 sketches, I’ve found some interesting points to add in the prototype that wasn’t in my mind.

The key features I choose are:

Was hard at the beginning to decide what features and options I wanted to include at the user flow as it was many of them. Trying different options I’ve picked up the happy path user flow displayed below.

Happy path user flow

So I began building prototypes with the aim being to test the content hierarchies and made new iterations and create a user flow that was intuitive while making the features apparent and smooth. I had not forgotten about Neil, but I needed to have an app, to begin with. Once I had my paper prototype I carried a few users tests.

The test scenario was ‘User will have to choose the preferred type of discounts, read a brief explanation of the lesson, complete it and set up a reminder’.

P: User tried a few times to ‘go back’ on the screen and asked for it.

S: Add ‘go back’ button on all the screens

P: User wanted to listen again to the sentence even if he did it right.

S: Add ‘go forward’ button on the ‘listen and repeat’ screen.

P: Didn’t understand the blue progress bar.

S: Add 2 colours to the progress bar to be clearly understood.

P: Tap on the discount to check details.

S: Add discount brief description pop-up on ‘rewards’screen.

The user receives succulent discounts based on his hobbies once he finishes each lesson. Easy grammar understanding at the beginning of the lessons and a fun and interactive listen and repeat learning method.

Lesson remind me available for the user to decide the best moment of the day to keep learning.

I learned during this process that testing what you have at every stage of the way is the key to progress. If I had more time, I would certainly have performed more usability tests on the prototypes and dug a little deeper into what my test subjects were thinking. Many surprising insights were revealed in 2 weeks, which I’m sure will stay with me for much longer, so I expect to always be surprised by users and their behaviours.

Discounish was created to facilitate and motivate Spanish learning, receiving discounts.
