Role of social media in Journalism

With the world becoming more and more technologically advanced every day, different social media outlets provide a way for majority of people to get their news and information. There are over a combined total of 69 million total Twitter users in the U.S. and nearly 50% of them use it daily. It is our job as journalists to provide people with the truth and correct information rather than information in which is bias or completely false.

The way in which we get our information is changing. Who do you know that still gets a newspaper delivered to their front yard everyday? MILLIONS of people have changed the way in which they receive their information or read their news stories.

As journalists, we are taught the rules of ethics and to only put stories out there if they’re true.

More people need to be aware of where they are getting sources and information from. With the world going more digital, just about anyone can share a story out to the public and who knows if it could be true or fake?

While using social media as a source of news stories, make sure you are getting it from reputable person or outlet.

The roles of journalists in social media is becoming far more important in the world today. Different social media outlets are continuing to grow and is the main way for us journalists to voice our own ideals to a mass audience. When getting information from an online source, be sure that it is reputable and not a fake story.
