Notched Phones and iPhone X should be Ashamed of this Phone

MWC 2018 — Vivo unveiled its concept phone APEX with a whopping 98% screen-to-body ratio

Take a minute or two and astound yourself to the image of the phone. Remember, this is just a concept phone, but it works functionally like any other smartphone.

Shaving off bezels is one of the smartphone design trends in 2017 and the trend is likely to continue. Unfortunately, some (and probably more) manufacturers have decided to add a notch to the display to fit in hardware for the front of the phone (sensors, selfie cams and others). This design choice is arguably questionable as to being a hindrance for a better overall smartphone user experience.

Albeit being a concept phone, the Vivo’s Apex does not lack any of the features most users look for in a phone. It’s still got a headphone jack for starters, a front facing camera hidden in the body that can be activated or hidden mechanically when switching from shooting modes and an under-display fingerprint sensor that covers the entire bottom half of the phone when unlocking it and an earpiece for answering call.

As good looking as it is, there are compromises to the design of Vivo’s Apex. Ditching the traditional earpiece for a vibrating motor (piezoelectric motor) under the glass to replicate sounds from calls which can have a louder sound leak compared to using a traditional earpiece. Ditching the traditional placement of the front camera will make it less likely for the user to take a spontaneous and perfect selfie moment because it will take approximately a second for the front camera pod to lift up from the body of the phone before using the front camera.

If any of the manufacturers are reading, please consider that putting a notch affects the user experience in a varying degrees. Some may ignore it but some can’t stand it(including myself) while using it. By adding a notch in your phones, users are entailed to being distracted every time they look at their phones no matter how hard they try to ignore it. Please remember the fact that when a design affects the functionality of using or consuming something negatively, it’s a poor design choice through and through.

So please take a look of this phone and consider your design choices again whether the notch should stay or die in your next phones.
