Cold Showers and a Lesson in Gratitude

I spent some time trying to restart the heater and when my efforts proved fruitless, I was annoyed. More than annoyed, actually. And when I found out that the earliest appointment for a technician to…

As a Leader

I think the questionnaires I completed gave me a better view of what good traits I have and what traits I need to improve on. Some of the questionnaires included getting answers from other people and I think it gave me more honest and wider view of myself. In some cases, I had a bias for myself and learning how my friends and family see me is beneficial. Questionnaires like these are going to continue to help me become a better leader as my scores continue to get better.

The first questionnaire I chose was from section two. It was designed to help me recognize my general leadership traits. As the questionnaire predicted, I scored myself more highly than my family and friends did. The results I found were that I am good at being empathic, sensitive, diligent, and conscientious. These skills mean that I am good at reading a room and understanding the feelings of others. I also do things to make work easier for others, rather than harder. I was also shown to be reliable and determined. The skills I can work on are being outgoing and confident. In this section, my family actually scored me higher than I scored myself which I believe means I seem confident to other people. I also think that seeming confident is almost as good as being confident in many situations. In virtual teams, I think these skills have different values. I think virtual teams often give the employees greater responsibility to manage their time and which mean they need to be determined, diligent, and conscientious. I think being removed by an online network can make it difficult to see the confidence and empathic traits in a leader. These skills are still important, but I think a virtual leader could get away with lacking in these skills.

The second questionnaire I took was from section three. It was made to highlight peoples’ strengths as leaders and help them figure out what type of leading style they are good at. My best score was in the encourager section. I am good at motivating people to get work done and do their work. Right now I do this by being a good example and making the other employees feel included. I also am a skilled mediator. I think this is because I try to avoid conflict and I try to give my coworkers the other person’s point of view when they have a conflict. I need to get better being analytic and being an implementor. I think I lacked points in the analytic section because sometimes I begin trying to solve a problem without getting all of the information first. Sometimes I go with the first idea I have to solve a problem rather than thinking of a few different solutions. I had fewer points on the implementor section because sometimes I can get distracted from the original task and I begin a different one. I also try to finish projects too quickly and may overlook certain details. I think I can improve my skills in these sections by slowing down and really thinking about the situation before I act. I think making lists to stay organized could also bring better results. In online teams, the skills I lacked in are very important. I would need to be able to manage my own time and often complete projects without getting immediate feedback from coworkers. I would need to be careful that I was completing the project fully and on time. Adapting my relationship skills to virtual teams could be difficult as well. I would hope to develop a rapport with my coworkers so I could treat situations the same as in-person teams if conflicts arise.

Learning from these questionnaires and videos was fun and helpful. I have never been a huge fan of taking quizzes to learn more about myself, but some of these questionnaires were very helpful. I learned that I am good at understanding people and putting myself in others’ shoes. I think this will help me build relationships in teams that I lead. I am glad about this because I feel that relationship building is one of the most important aspects of a team. I need to be better at giving directions to employees. I currently try to create as little work as possible for the people I manage, but sometimes it is not the best way to go. I need to be a stronger and more firm leader who can tell people what they should do and how they should do it rather than try to phrase it in a way that makes me not look like the “bad guy.” Employees expect to be told at least some tasks by their leader.

In the future, I want to improve my leadership qualities in teams that I do not have strong relationships with. I also want to become more firm and improve my ability to make decisions and give orders. I need to learn how to give employees clear directions without being rude or belittling them. Currently, I have trouble giving orders because I don’t want my coworkers to think I am ordering them around. I hope to be a leader who is seen as an equal but has superior or advanced knowledge. I want my future employees to feel comfortable in their positions and know exactly what is expected of them. I hope to also motivate them sufficiently to do what needs to be done.
