Having This One Trait Will Make You Resilient

The one trait that makes you resilient — on the job, off the job, in life, in love — is being a problem-solver.

The good news is: All of us are problem solvers. It is our ability to adapt to our surroundings, redesigning the space where our internal and external worlds meet.

What does it mean to be a problem-solver? At first, you might think of math, and think, No, that’s not for me. I’m not good at that. Or maybe you think of economic or medical problems and think, No, I couldn’t possibly do that. I am not a problem solver.

Whenever you meet an obstacle in your life and your next thought is What can I do now with what I have? or Where can I go from here? That is problem solving.

The best solutions start with the best questions. Questions open up your mind to all the different paths you can take.

Water is the best problem-solver there is. Alan Watts, a 20th century philosopher wrote in his book, Still the Mind:

As the whole world is experiencing a pandemic, each of us are all problem-solving. We are adapting. Millions of people are getting laid off, including many of those closest to me. Millions of people are experiencing tremendous loss.

Nobody wanted this to happen, but it’s happening, and we can either bring each other down by complaining about it or do what we can with the time that is given to us.

And if all you do is use this time to rest or find small moments of joy, that is doing something about it.
