Pandemics have often been moments for workers to tip the balance of power

As more Americans get vaccinated against COVID-19, things are, we’re told, getting back to normal. We’re ditching masks, having people over to our houses again, and venturing into restaurants. The economy, though, hasn’t quite returned to the way it was before the pandemic began.

The worst pandemic in human history was the Black Death, which ravaged Europe between 1347 and 1351. It created suffering on an unimaginable scale. But those that survived the plague made the most of it; many workers worked to improve their lives. The plague ended up being both a blow to the values of the feudal system (the supposedly superior nobles died just the same as their inferiors) and to its economic arrangements.

The feudal system had dominated Europe for centuries by this point. Its rigid class structure and lack of economic freedom ensured that the wealthy and powerful remained so, and the system locked peasants into a life of brutal labor, poor treatment, and dangerous poverty. The Black Death shook up this system.

Peasants and other workers realized that, with the labor supply much smaller after the plague, they could negotiate a better deal for themselves. Before the outbreak of disease, the population of Europe had been increasing rapidly — this kept land scarce, rent high, and wages low. Now, things…
