Bilingual bus driver praised for announcing stops in both Chinese and English

He says that he started making bilingual announcements because he was worried his passengers might miss their stops

A 50-year-old bus driver in Xi’an has earned acclaim online for taking the time to announce stops aloud in both Chinese and English.

Now that he’s become an internet star, he says that he has the support of his (presumably jealous) coworkers.

While buses in Xi’an have automated announcements in both Chinese and English, that system sometimes breaks down. Worried that his passengers might miss their stops, Ding decided to start just doing the broadcasts himself.

Every day he receives compliments on his English from both locals and foreigners. He says that while he knows his English isn’t actually all that great, he’s glad to know that he can provide his passengers with some happiness.

“I really love this type of work. I love the hustle and bustle and I love serving people,” he says.
