The Secret to Becoming Internet Famous

The Silver Bullet To Fame

It’s hard to break out cause the market is saturated.

Every day someone is accumulating a million subscribers on YouTube. It’s the same with Instagram or FaceBook. And we want a slice of that cake cause it’s the new wave of media.

We are now waving goodbye to traditional media — television, radio and print. Ten years since I last consumed them and that was the cusp of internet media. My younger sister, who’s nine years younger than me, didn’t even experience consuming from those outlets.

Kids are now looking up to Instagram models and YouTube vloggers. They won’t even recognize D-list celebrities from local television dramas. They now have dreams of becoming internet famous.

I’ve been creating content for three years now, on and off. I started with YouTube back in 2015 uploading a short film I’ve made. I submitted it to film festivals by sending them a link. I spent one year in the indie filmmaking scene and helped friends finish micro-budget films. I learned a ton about production, project management and directing.

This paved the way for YouTube content creation during 2016. I was tired of traditional filmmaking where I had to wait for the stars and moon to align. I wanted to create something in an instant. This is where I discovered Casey Neistat, who was then blowing up with vlogging. This inspired me to start vlogging. I vlogged my life for two years.

At the end of 2017, I quit everything. I was not gaining traction and I wasn’t going anywhere. After a hundred videos, I only had a hundred subscribers. Most of them were bots. I would get an average of zero comments and zero likes from my videos.

Finding my 1000 True Fans is hard. It’s impossible to break out in this industry.

The market is saturated.

Bullshit! It’s not saturated. I was making up excuses for why I was not making it through. There is a market for everyone. Some creators find niches that are super weird.

You can find a creator who only talks about nail polishes. There’s someone who unboxes things. And there’s someone who only talks about minimalism.

There are a thousand niches out there.

If you continue to paint yourself as a generalist, then it’ll be hard for you to break out.

Do you want to succeed the new wave of media? Build your category and own it. Find your 1000 True Fans and nurture them. Create a community where they can interact.

We are blindsided cause we see our icons as those who talk about a thousand of things. Pewdiepie started with gaming videos only and Casey Neistat with short films only.

As with anything in life, it all takes time. The icons that we look up to paid their dues with years of hustle and hard work. It took them an average of five years to get to where they are now.

How many hours are you putting up to make it work? How many videos have you finished? How many blog posts? How many photoshoots? How many podcast episodes?

Stop dreaming of becoming famous one day. Wake up from your sweet slumber and face the harsh reality — it’s not luck that gets you there, it’s grit and sweat.

Talk to you soon my friend.
