How to connect AWS RDS from Local

When we create a RDS in AWS and then try to connect RDS from local machine, you will find it not works.

Even you selected “Public accessibility”, here public accessibility means we can connect to the RDS from a EC2 instance and this instance can outside of the RDS’s VPC.

The reason is simple, out local IP is not in the VPC security’s whitelist.

Add an inbound rule under security groups to support any IP like below:

Obviously, this solution is dangerous to a real project.

Instead of an anywhere IP, we can use a fixed IP address. However, local IP will changes if we develop in multiple places.

So, DON’T take this solution.

Take EC2 for example, we need add EC2’s security group id to RDS’s security group:

open RDS’s security group, go to “In bound” tab, add a record like below:

Use ssh tunnel with below code

Then we can connect the RDS from local terminal:

or from local application like Workbench.

SSH tunnel can be easily timeout.
